National First-Generation College Celebration at Temple University 

Monday, November 8th

Time: 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Meeting Location: Howard Gittis Student Center 200BC


Are you a First-Generation Student? First-generation students are the first in their family to attend or graduate from college.  Come celebrate being a first-generation student with numerous departments and organization from across Temple's campus. Enjoy food, games, giveaways, and most importantly fun with students, staff, and faculty that are or were first-generation college students and learn about all of the on-campus and community resources available to students.

Celebrate National First-Generation College Celebration Day on Nov. 8th by joining our online discussion of two short readings on First-Gen student experiences and the ways in which we can better support our own First-Gen students at Temple. Then, join our in-person roundtable discussion on Wednesday, Nov. 17th at 12pm for a deeper discussion of the needs and concerns of First-Gen students and the resources available at Temple to support their learning and success.  


Build Your Personal and Professional Brand @ Temple University: First-Gen Edition

Kamina Richardson will explore ways to create a brand that connects you to internships, business professionals, and careers. Learn the tools to connect your academic goals with your professional goals as you navigate student life as a First-Gen Student. 


Fellowships for First-Gen Students

Meeting Location:

Are you interested in learning more about fellowships but don't know where to start? Come learn about funded internal and external opportunities where underrepresented populations and first-generation students are the target audience. During this session we will discuss specific programs like the Smith Future Scholars, Leadership Alliance Summer Research Initiative, the Public Policy and International Affairs Junior Summer Institute, the Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad, and more.   

We will also discuss what the application process entails, what makes a competitive candidate, and a practical timeline to gain experience and be prepared to apply. College Access Community of Practice Meeting

Career Prep Like a First-Gen Student

How do you make your dream a reality? How do you get that first professional job? The career center is here to help! 

Join us for a workshop that explains all the services we provide that will enable you to not only thrive at Temple, but not miss a beat after you graduate! Learn how to identify and talk about the attributes and skills you have developed as a first-generation college student. Recognize that you have many skills and experiences to offer employers that can help you succeed. You are a first-generation student — and you rock!

In honor of National First-Generation College Celebration Day (November 8), the CAT invites you to join our roundtable discussion with Drs. Jennifer Johnson and Juliet Curci along with student representatives to learn more about the specific needs and concerns of our First-Gen students at Temple. In this session, we will share information about available campus resources and discuss teaching practices that can help us create more welcoming, supportive, and inclusive learning experiences for our First-Gen students.
